Lake Forest is full of incredible people, businesses, and opportunities. To help community members stay up-to-date on recent changes and news, we’ve included a few of the most important updates from around the town in the sections below.
Mountain View Affordable Housing — EST. Summer 2023
As contractors continue to work towards completing the Mountain View affordable housing project, we want to discuss the opportunities for the new development for community members.
Once completed, the 71-unit property off Raymond Way will offer one-, two-, and three-bedroom homes to those with a household income between 30 and 60 percent of the area median income. In addition to helping those classified as low-income, community members experiencing homelessness will have access to eight of the units.
Those interested in staying in a Mountain View property will need to begin the application process in February/March with National Community Renaissance (National CORE). For more information on the development, interested parties can sign up for the mailing list at bit.ly/MountainViewLF. Once development nears completion, National CORE will email out a flyer.
New Landscape Improvement Program
Lake Forest is a wonderful community, and everyone deserves to enjoy the beauty of the surrounding area. One way local citizens can help improve the city’s landscape is through the “Expand the Forest” initiative. This landscaping project allows community members to sponsor a memorial tree planted in one of the available parks.
The memorial trees are an excellent way to give back to the community and offer a unique way to honor a loved one. To participate in the program, citizens will need to fill out an application with the type of tree, location, and a $93 application fee.
Improved Lake Forest E-Bike Laws
As electric bikes are becoming more common throughout the city, keeping safety a top priority is important. Recently, city officials have been receiving multiple reports of e-bike riders acting recklessly. Without a focus on safe riding, injuries and deaths could increase significantly.
City officials conducted a town hall meeting in 2021 to discuss electric bikes with the Orange County Sheriff’s Department and Providence Mission Hospital. The medical facility mentioned a steady rise in e-bike injuries, from 34 incidents in 2020 to 113 in 2021. For 2022, the number of injuries was over 200, many of which were due to riders not wearing helmets.
While it’s impossible to stop all e-bike related injuries, Lake Forest is implementing new laws that will hopefully reduce the number of incidents.
The following is a list of some of the new e-bike laws to familiarize yourself with:
- Anyone riding an e-bike on a sidewalk must do so at a reasonable and prudent speed that does not endanger others.
- Speed limits for electric bikes are now 10 mph on the street and 5 mph on sidewalks.
- Anyone under 18 must wear a helmet while riding an e-bike.
- Improved e-bike safety enforcement efforts, including the impoundment of the bike for unsafe use.
