When did you last hike Red Rock Canyon on a weekday after work? If it was in the past week, you probably made it. Since Sunday's time change, getting a weekday walk in at Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park, near the top of Glenn Ranch Road, means reaching the trailhead somewhere around the middle of the afternoon.
Whiting Ranch opens at 7 a.m. and closes at sunset, all year. Sunset in Lake Forest was 4:58 p.m. on November 1. It drops to 4:42 p.m. by November 30. Over the next four months, the trails closest to The Oaks at Portola Hills are limited three ways: by daylight, by rain and by a dog ban. The park that keeps working after dark is the small city park a few blocks down Glenn Ranch Road.
Three Rules, Four Parks
OC Parks' fall-winter schedule started November 1. It splits county parks into two groups. Most regional parks, including Mile Square, Yorba and Laguna Niguel, now close at 6 p.m. Wilderness parks and a few regional parks close at sunset year-round. Every county park within easy reach of Portola Hills is in the second group.
| Park | Hours | After rain | Dogs | Parking |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park | 7 a.m. to sunset | Trails may close up to three days | Not permitted | $3 daily |
| O'Neill Regional Park | 7 a.m. to sunset | Trails close three days | Leashed, on select trails | $3 weekdays, $5 weekends |
| Thomas F. Riley Wilderness Park | Closes at sunset | May close up to three days | Not permitted | $3 daily |
| Portola Park, 28040 Glenn Ranch Road | Dawn to dusk; lighted pickleball courts | No trail closure rule published | Dog park on site | Parking lot |
The three county parks share the same closing rule, so changing trailheads doesn't buy any extra daylight. They differ on rain and dogs, and those two rules decide whether a winter outing happens at all.
Sunset Is Only the Last Deadline
Whiting Ranch's office keeps its own hours, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. That matters because the park's closure guidance is a phone number. OC Parks says to call the park office at (949) 923-2245 for current trail closures. If you call at 4:30 p.m. to ask whether the trails dried out after a storm, the office has already closed, and sunset is less than half an hour away.
Closures after rain can last for days. Whiting Ranch says its trails may stay closed for up to three days after rain. A storm on Thursday can close the Glenn Ranch Road and Borrego trailheads through the weekend. O'Neill Regional Park has the same three-day rule, and Riley Wilderness Park lists up to three days. If you drive out to Trabuco Canyon hoping the trails there drained faster, you'll find the same policy.
Check the OC Parks alerts page before heading out too. It lists park notices, including upcoming closures and operating-hour changes. It has also kept a notice up since March about the Four Corners drinking fountain inside Whiting Ranch, which may not work at times because of low municipal water pressure. OC Parks' advice is to bring your own water.
The Dog Rule Takes Two Parks Off the List
For anyone walking a dog, the closest wilderness options are out. Whiting Ranch doesn't permit dogs, and neither does Riley. Limestone Canyon, the preserve in the Irvine Ranch Open Space, also prohibits dogs.
O'Neill Regional Park, at 30892 Trabuco Canyon Road, is the county option that takes dogs, within limits. Its park rules allow dogs on a leash no longer than six feet in the campground, on paved roads, and on the Mesa, Arroyo Mesa, Twisted Tire and Pawfoot trails within the campground. Dogs are barred from the park's named wilderness areas and trails. So a dog walk at O'Neill stays on the campground loops, it costs $5 to park on a weekend, and it ends at sunset like everything else in the county system.
The Park Down the Street Got Lights
Portola Park opened without lights. The City Council chose to leave them out of the original project, a decision the Orange County Register reported in August 2019. That changed in 2023. Patch reported in September 2023 that the lights in Portola Park's dog area were on for the fall. City Manager Debra Rose told Patch the council had paused on lights to see what the public wanted, and she dated that pause to 2020. Then she explained what changed:
"Since then, the public use has been terrific, so now the council members directed staff to install lighting across the park."
The City's pickleball page now describes Portola Park's three dedicated pickleball courts as lighted. Under Lake Forest's general park rules, parks are open dawn to dusk, and lighted athletic fields or tennis courts stay open until 10 p.m. That makes the courts on Glenn Ranch Road the one outdoor spot near The Oaks designed for the hours after a winter workday.
The dog park takes more care. The City still lists Portola Dog Park as open dawn to dusk, and the Portola Park page still says lights for the pickleball courts and dog park are "coming Spring 2023." The lights exist, but the posted hours haven't changed. Read the rules at the gate rather than assuming the dog park stays open after dark. In daylight, it's a well-equipped space. It has three separate areas with synthetic and natural turf, separate entrances for large and small dogs, shade structures, water stations in each play area, obstacles and benches.
For a later dog walk, the City lists Barker Ranch Dog Park at 25600 Baffin Bay with hours of 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. That's three hours past a late-November sunset.
The City's rain rules work differently from the county's. Lake Forest closes sports and natural-turf fields for at least 24 hours after rain, generally 24 to 48. It doesn't publish a closure rule for walking paths. Portola Park's walking path and Serrano Creek Park's path at 25101 Serrano Road fall under the citywide dawn-to-dusk hours. Closer still, The Oaks' own network of more than 1.5 miles of walking and hiking trails looks out over Lake Forest and Trabuco Canyon.
Wilderness Moves to Mornings and Weekends
All three county parks open at 7 a.m., so the time change works in hikers' favor at the start of the day. Whiting Ranch has 23 trails and roughly 17 miles of graded roads and single-track. Red Rock Canyon and Billy Goat are reserved for hikers only. The Glenn Ranch Road lot is at 27901 Glenn Ranch Road. Its parking machine takes $1 bills, quarters, Visa, Mastercard and the OC Parks Annual Pass. The best time to call about closures after a storm is first thing in the morning, while the office is open and the whole day's daylight is still ahead.
Limestone Canyon is open only through scheduled activities that require advance registration. Two upcoming hikes start at 7 a.m.
- Sunday, November 8: Limestone Canyon Cardio Hike: East Sinks, 7 to 11:30 a.m. It's a 10-mile, level-4 hike for ages 18 and up. Registration is required, and walk-ups aren't accepted.
- Sunday, December 6, 8 a.m.: Registration opens for the Winter Solstice hike.
- Monday, December 21: Winter Solstice Early Morning Hike to The Sinks, 7 to 11 a.m., also 10 miles, level 4, ages 18 and up. Its listing warns that the route may be shortened or changed because of weather or trail conditions.
The shortest afternoons come in early December. Sunset in Lake Forest is earliest on December 4, at 4:42 p.m., and only moves back to 4:52 p.m. by December 31. OC Parks keeps the fall-winter schedule until spring-summer hours return on March 14, 2027. Until then, weekday trail time at Whiting Ranch means a morning start, a call to (949) 923-2245 after any storm, and an exit well before 5 p.m.
We plan around the same sunsets and storm days as our neighbors in The Oaks at Portola Hills.
